About
Desky Kernôwek Bew
Desky Kernôwek Bew is an audio language course which teaches the Cornish language. Vocabulary, phrases, grammar and constructions are presented in speech only. There are no spelling difficulties, no formal grammar tables or vocab lists. All you do is listen and learn by repetition, just the way we all learnt to speak our native language. "Desky" means "learn" or "learning", "Kernôwek" is Cornish for "the Cornish language" and "Bew" means "living" or "alive". Kernôwek Bew, "living Cornish" is based on the Cornish language of the 17th and 18th centuries, which represents the last stage of traditional spoken native Cornish, also referred to as Late Cornish. The language died out in the course of the 19th century and, remarkably, was revived in the early 20th century. The majority of Cornish speakers in the revival movement speak and write a variety which is based on the mediaeval literature of the 14th to the 16th centuries. This so-called Middle Cornish relates to Kernôwek Bew similarly to the way literary Welsh, based on the Bible translation of the 16th century relates to the modern spoken dialects of Modern Welsh.
